Millions Knives is the main antagonist of Trigun (1998 anime).
Biography
Knives begins life as a kid onboard a human colony ship that is part of a Project SEEDS (disambiguation) fleet drifting through space. Both he and his twin brother, Vash, are independent Plants born from one of the dependent Plants during the voyage, and are raised primarily by Rem Saverem, who is one of the human crew members. Knives, though more analytical and reserved than his brother, seems normal enough at first. He gets along with Rem, Vash, and the other crew members, and enjoys learning and spending time in the ship's rec room. But while Vash becomes closer to Rem, Knives becomes more distant and begins to ponder what he is and how he fits in among human society. Little does the crew know that Knives has been suffering verbal and physical abuse at the hands of alcoholic crew member Steve, who is resentful of both Knives and Vash. Knives cuts his own hair into its characteristic short crop around the same time Rem gives Vash his iconic hairstyle, and it is seemingly after this that things begin to unravel.
Through manipulation, Knives gets the crew of the ship (sans Rem) to turn against each other and kill themselves in one way or another. Then Knives sets the entire fleet's course such that it will crash-land onto the desert planet below and kill all of the sleeping colonists as well. Rem shoves Vash and Knives into an escape pod and launches it before making one last-ditch effort to save the fleet. Vash is devastated as he watches the ship that Rem is on explode, but Knives reacts with homicidal glee, saying he is glad that she is gone.
The pod crash-lands onto the planet, and the boys must stick together to survive. Knives almost has his head bashed in by Vash while he is sleeping, but luckily for him Vash backs off. Some time passes, and both Knives and Vash watch the survivors of the crash develop settlements. At some point, Knives and Vash come upon some old ship wreckage. Knives tells Vash to wait outside while he disappears within. When Knives finally emerges, he has a matching pair of guns - one of which he gives to Vash to become his iconic weapon. Shortly after this, Vash shoots Knives in the leg, shocking him. He did not expect Vash to betray him like this. Vash is also shocked as well as horrified by what he did, and runs away. Some time later, Knives presumably forms a small personal army of criminals and mercenaries that he christens the Gung-Ho Guns - the anime does not go into much detail about how and why this happens, though.
Knives eventually gets Vash to come to the city of July for a meeting and confrontation, but this does not go well. Though Vash loses an arm, Knives loses everything from the waist down when he goads Vash into using his Angel Arm to shoot him. The city of July is also destroyed, and Vash gains both his bounty and his infamous reputation. Knives is presumably picked up and tended to medically during this time, though by whom is never mentioned. He then goes on to spend the next two and a half decades upside down in a stasis tube regenerating. During this time, the Gung-Ho Guns are run by Legato Bluesummers, and are used to hunt down Vash and torment him in retaliation for what he did to Knives.
Knives eventually recuperates and has one last confrontation with Vash. He and Vash are pretty evenly matched in ability for most of it, though it eventually seems like Knives might get the upper hand. To his surprise, however, Vash shoots him multiple times (though not fatally) and immobilizes him. The last time Knives is seen, he is slung over Vash's shoulder and being carried back to the town that Vash was staying in before their confrontation. It is presumed that he will be slowly rehabilitated by Vash, though the anime ends before anything more is shown.
Character
Appearance
Knives is tall and toned, with a body akin to a Greek statue. He has sharp features, and wears his white-blond hair in a short crew-cut. For clothing, he simply wears one of the old Project Seeds bodysuits, sometimes with a raggedy poncho over it.
Personality
Knives comes across as cold and sociopathic. He prefers logic over emotion, seeing the acceptance and expression of emotion as a sign of weakness. When it comes to Vash, however, he can become very emotional. He seems to experience love as obsession and express it as possessiveness. His wrath is something to be feared when combined with the powers that he has.
Occupation
He's the series' main antagonist. His eventual goal is to destroy the humans on the planet who survived the Fall.
Family
Knives has one brother, Vash the Stampede, from whom he is estranged. Rem Saverem served as his adoptive mother.
Relationships
Rem Saverem
Knives' relationship to Rem is primarily that of mother-and-child.
Vash the Stampede
His relationship with Vash is that of an estranged sibling.
Legato Bluesummers
Knives' relationship to Legato is that of a god or lord - someone worthy of reverence.
Gung-Ho-Guns
Knives' personal army. Legato has control of them while Knives regenerates. He is the only member of the bunch to talk to Knives directly.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Wolfwood is the subordinate of a subordinate, and it is questionable if Knives even knows he exists in the anime.
Canonically, Knives has no lovers, as he holds humanity in the utmost contempt.
