Biography

Nothing is known about Legato's early life: when he was born, where he was born, or who his parents were. His story begins as an unnamed teenage slave in a fortress town who is used repeatedly for the sexual gratification of others. He despises everyone living there and hatches a plan to kill them all by getting them to kill each other. In his spare time, he devises and builds a set of bracelets that can shoot ultra-thin wires that embed themselves into the muscles of a victim and allow Legato to control their movements through electrical impulses. He attempts to deploy this system against all 1300 fortress-dwellers at once, but it's too overwhelming for him and he gets apprehended. As punishment, the man who is presumably his owner shackles him to a Y-shaped cross and begins to rape him. The act is interrupted by a giant scythe slicing through the building that this is happening in, cutting the rapist to pieces and freeing Legato, who is just barely able to save himself by deploying his string system against the weapon. This is when Legato first meets Millions Knives.

Legato finds himself naked and stunned in the rubble of what used to be a town. Knives is surprised to find that he missed a resident in his killing spree, but soon surmises that it likely wasn't a coincidence. Legato naturally wants to know more about the mysterious and powerful stranger that was so easily able to do what he couldn't, and begs Knives to either let him follow along or kill him where he stands - for if Knives doesn't want him, then he has no more interest in living. Knives sees something in Legato at that moment, and chooses to let him follow along. For Legato, this encounter is tantamount to a religious conversion ("finding Jesus").

Some time later, Legato is present with Knives and William Conrad in the city of July when Knives confronts Vash the Stampede for the first time. He gets Vash to use his full plant powers, obliterating the city of July and the lower half of Knives' body. Legato and Conrad then find what's left of him in the aftermath. Knives rebukes Legato for becoming hysterical while Conrad states that there's still time to save Knives, but that they have to act quickly to get him into stasis. It is then that Legato notices Vash perched atop some rubble, and surmises that he's the likely culprit of the disaster. He is prevented from going after Vash for revenge at that time, but it is here that his deep-seated grudge against him is born.
