Descartes is a minor character who appears in Trigun (1998 anime) and Trigun Maximum.

Biography

1998 anime

Descartes and his gang tried to catch Vash the Stampede in order to claim the $$60 billion bounty. Due to the conflicting rumors of Vash heard by Meryl, Milly, and Loose Ruth, Descartes was mistakenly assumed to be Vash the Stampede. The $$60 Billion Man

Trigun Maximum

Descartes was imprisoned by the No Man's Land Cavalry, serving a 830 year sentence for an unknown crime. He was offered a chance to reduce his sentence by using his combat skills to assist the Cavalry raid the manor of Lord Daryl Goodman. Descartes was ordered to kill Grey the Ninelives and Midvalley the Hornfreak when they emerged from the manor.

Character

Appearance

Descartes is a giant man who stands 12 feelz (feet?) tall. He is burly and heavyset with short legs. His green hair styled in a mohawk. His earlobes are very long and both are pierced with a single hoop earring. His right arm is entirely mechanical. Large screws seemingly protrude from the sides of his head and left shoulder.

Weapon

Boomerang

Descartes wields a giant metal boomerang, which he throws using his mechanical arm. The boomerang is powerful enough to slice entire buildings and boulders cleanly in two.

1998 anime

To throw the boomerang, a retractable cable with a hook is attached to the wrist of Descartes' mechanical arm. The cable reel is attached to his left hip. There is a large, spinning screw-shaped button on the reel that is pressed. When Descartes pulls his arm back, this he presses the button to lock the cable and create tension. The button is pressed again to release the tension when he throws the boomerang. The boomerang is capable of deflecting bullets. When not using the boomerang, Descartes carries it on his back.

Trigun Maximum

Descartes has at least three boomerangs, which were presented to him on a cart. It is unclear if the cart belongs to Descartes or the Cavalry. His mechanical arm appears to be powered by a pneumeic system or some type of explosive, which is controlled with a handheld trigger, attached via a cable and held in his left hand. Very hot shells or casings are expelled upon using it.

Notes

  • Descartes appears in the opening credits of every episode of the original English Pioneer release as well as the Funimation 2010 Trigun: The Complete Series DVD release due to the first episode's credits being mistakenly used for all 26 episodes.
    • However, he appears on episode 2's opening on all releases of the show due to it not having a unique opening credits sequence and reusing episode 1's.
  • Descartes' name is not spoken in the show itself, though his name is seen in the show's credits and in the Anime Art Book.
